Samsung and LG are about to land a big deal with Apple. Both companies will be supplying the displays for future iPhones. It is said that LG’s deal is very close to being done, all they have to do is sign the contracts.
The displays LG and Samsung will be suppling are organic light emitting diode (OLED) displays. These displays are thinner and have better picture quality compared to Apple’s current LCD displays. Also, the displays are not regular flat models, but instead flexible OLED displays. Below is an image of one of LG’s flexible OLED displays.
LG and Samsung will be investing $12.8 billion in to building the OLED production line over the next 2-3 years. However, Samsung will be making more money on the deal as they already have some factories in place and can supply 30% more displays than LG.
While LG is said to be very close to signing, Samsung is not. There is disagreements on unit cost of products, technical cooperation, advance investments, and more. However, Apple is planning to pay part of the investment upfront to LG and Samsung to open new facilities.
The LG and Samsung displays are said to be in iPhones starting in 2018, probably called the iPhone 8, but are hoping to supply them are early as 2017.
