With the Galaxy S7, Samsung is releasing two slightly different models based on the processor inside. Consumers in the United States will get the model with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 while the rest of the world sees Samsung’s in-house Exynos 8890. That’s not a very large difference and it’s doubtful any consumers will experience (or even get the opportunity to notice) anything. LG, however, is sending a very different G5 to Latin America.
Two key internal specifications for the G5 in Latin America will be different from what the rest of the world gets.
Cristián Correa, LG Sales Manager in Chile, confirmed to Pisapapeles that Latin America’s G5 will have a weaker processor and a lesser amount of RAM than the standard Snapdragon 820 and 4GB of RAM announced last weekend. The G5 in Latin America will still have a Qualcomm-made processor, but this one is the Snapdragon 652 and it’s paired with 3GB of RAM.
Despite having more cores than the Snapdragon 820, the Snapdragon 652 isn’t anywhere near as strong. So this is a situation where consumers might be getting an inferior experience than others with the same device.
In addition to not selling the world’s G5, LG won’t even give consumers in Latin America the chance to by another one of its products. The new LG 360 VR, the virtual reality headset announced as a G5 companion device, will not be sold at all in Latin America. Correa said countries in the region lack worthwhile interest in the virtual reality.
Most carriers and retailers who have signed on to offer the LG G5 should begin taking pre-orders on March 18. A release date is expected sometime in April.
