Google to retire the Chrome app launcher

Google_Chrome

An announcement made by the search engine giant has confirmed that the Chrome app launcher will soon be removed, simply because not enough people use it.

For those unaware, the Chrome app launcher is an icon that sits on a computer’s taskbar or dock and enables users to quickly access Chrome apps. It looks like the icon is soon to be extinct, however, as the tool hasn’t proved popular enough to keep around.

Discussing the changes over on the Chromium Blog, Engineering Director Marc Pawliger has noted that users on Windows, Mac, and Linux ‘prefer to launch their apps from within Chrome’.

Pawliger added:

“The removal process will take place over the next several months. Beginning in a few weeks, Chrome will no longer enable the launcher when users first install a Chrome app.”

Folk with the Chrome app launcher still around on their computer will receive a message letting them know that the changes will soon be taking place. Google has confirmed that from July, all existing instances of the launcher will be removed for good.

With the Chrome app launcher waving goodbye, accessing apps can now be done from the bookmarks bar or from typing ‘chrome://apps’ in the omnibox.

Of course, you probably already knew this, which is one of the reasons Google is removing the Chrome app launcher in the first place.
