Sony could bring the PlayStation VR to other platforms, company says

Sony’s senior VP of Computer Entertainment, Masayasu Ito, revealed in an interview that the PlayStation VR could eventually makes its way to PC and maybe even other platforms.

The interview was with Japanese website Nikkeibut PC Gamer has the translation:

“Since PlayStation 4 shares a lot of its components with PCs, the possibility is there. At the moment we are focused on games and we are not ready to make any announcements at this stage, but I’d say there will be an expansion into various fields.”

Ito’s comment on “various fields” is interesting, indicating that we could see the PlayStation VR become compatible with more than just the PC platform in the future. Could mobile support be a possibility? Probably not, considering that both Google’s Cardboard and Samsung’s Gear VR operate in tandem with a smartphone. The PlayStation VR doesn’t have this compatibility, though it’s entirely possible that Sony could offer a version of the virtual reality headset at some point down the line, but that’s purely speculation at this point.

It really wouldn’t be a far-fetched idea, though. Both Samsung and Google are seeing a lot of success with their virtual reality headsets, and LG recently announced its own headset that it’s bringing to the market. Sony also has a handful of PlayStation applications already on Android, so there’s a sort of PlayStation “presence” on the Play Store already.

Maybe we’re looking into the statement a little too much, but either way, a virtual reality headset for mobile from Sony would be an awesome thing to have.

For now though, Sony’s PlayStation VR is only compatible with its own console and is set to officially release later this year.

Sony currently has its PlayStation VR Launch Bundle up for pre-order, but only for a limited time.
