If you have been by the YouTube web site any time today, you may have noticed a new icon in the video control bar. Matching the logo shown above, the button gives viewers the ability to switch over and watch videos in the new SnoopaVision mode.
While you may be tempted to think SnoopaVision might be some technology that lets you peek at some underlying code or Easter eggs in YouTube videos, the shape of the icon actually reveals the true nature. As it turns out, YouTube recently partnered with entertainment icon Snoop Dogg to develop a new, immersive video viewing technology built on top of YouTube’s 360 video capabilities.
YouTube explains in their video introducing the new SnoopaVision that Snoop Dogg did more than just lend his likeness to the product. He was a key part of the development team going so far as to help Google employees improve their code. If you dig through some of the related videos, you will find that Snoop Dogg also spent quite a bit of time developing beta videos to showcase the new SnoopaVision platform.
At the end of the SnoopaVision-ified videos, Snoop Dogg notes that the experience is so realistic that he has trouble telling whether he is in a video or in real life. It is entirely possibly he is experiencing April Fools’ Day as well.
