Samsung ready to showcase experimental wearables at CES

Samsung is set to showcase a host of experimental gadgets at this year’s CES, including the WELT, a healthcare belt that measures the daily habits of users.

Coming out of C-Lab, the group’s innovation program, Samsung is working on three projects that will be demonstrated at this year’s tech show in Las Vegas.

Discussing the new technology, Samsung said in a press release:

“As the projects are still in the development process, they are being showcased to assess their market potential and to gather hands-on feedback from CES attendees, enabling further improvements to be made.”

The first of these new products, the WELT, aims to offer ‘a more discreet way’ to track personal health, looking like a normal belt but bringing far more to the table.

The WELT is capable of measuring the waist size of its wearer whilst tracking eating habits and numbers of steps taken. WELT functions alongside a specialised mobile app that takes the data and offers personalised healthcare tips based on results.

Rink is also going to be making an appearance on the show floor, described as an ‘advanced hand-motion controller’ that pairs with mobile VR devices. The Rink hopes to offer gamers a much deeper level of immersion and its unique design means the device wraps around your hands rather than being held like a regular controller.

Finally, there’s TipTalk, which enables users to listen to the sound from their smart devices.

Arguably the most unusual of the products mentioned by Samsung this week, TipTalk is a watch strap that houses its own communication device. The strap can be attached to Samsung wearables such as the Gear S2, and doing so means owners can simply touch their ear to activate playback. It looks like something straight out of a Bond film.

We’ll be keeping a close eye on news from Samsung as CES draws closer. The consumer show will be running from January 6 to January 9, 2016.
