Amazon officially prohibits non-compliant USB Type-C cables, but consumers still need to be vigilant

Remember when Google’s Benson Leung took it upon himself to test the various USB Type-C cables in order to find out which ones met the standard, and which ones didn’t? Well, it seems that Amazon has decided to help in a different fashion by prohibiting USB Type-C cables that aren’t compliant with the standards set by the USB Implementers Forum Inc.

It’s great that Amazon is joining the fight to weed out the inferior USB Type-C cables, but what exactly is the issue? Well, many of the Type-C cables available on Amazon don’t carry the correct resistor. This means, much like the cable released by OnePlus for its OnePlus 2 handset, cables with incorrect resistors draw too much power which in turn damages the port on incompatible devices. This is something that Benson Leung found out when a dodgy cable made his Chromebook Pixel bite the dust.

Any USB-C™ (or USB Type-C™) cable or adapter product that is not compliant with standard specifications issued by “USB Implementers Forum Inc.”

Amazon will pull listings that are known to be non-compliant with the standards, but there will be some that either haven’t been tested or have simply slipped in under the radar. So, if you are in the market for a new USB Type-C cable for your Nexus 6P, Nexus 5X or Pixel C tablet, you should check the reviews on the product to see if it is suitable.

Have you had any experiences with one of these non-compliant USB Type-C cables? Let us know in the comments.
