Football legend Pelé sues Samsung for $30 million for using his likeness without permission

It seems that Samsung is in the midst of another lawsuit, but this time, it isn’t over allegedly stolen patents. Instead, the Korean electronics giant is being sued by football (or soccer) legend, over his likeness being used without permission in an advertising campaign that was run in The New York Times in October last year.

Pelé is suing for $30 million, in the belief that Samsung tried to pull a fast one on him. He alleges that Samsung had been in negotiations to use his image in promotions for its products, but that no agreement was reached. The ad in question (as seen above) promoted Samsung’s ultra-definition televisions and featured a person’s face that Pelé believes has a close likeness to his own, and a football player performing a scissors kick, which the lawsuit says was perfected by the Brazilian legend.

According to an interview with Fortune, Pelé’s lawyer, Frederick Sperling, said that the goal of the lawsuit is to prevent the incident from reoccurring, as well as obtaining fair restitution from Samsung. The Korean electronics company has yet to comment on the issue.
