From today, Twitter users are able to write a description for pictures they post as part of Twitter’s aim to make ‘accessible images for everyone’.

The latest update to the social media platform will have an impact on both the iOS and Android Twitter apps, and Twitter claims it’s ’empowering everyone to ensure content shared on Twitter is accessible to the widest possible audience.’

Speaking via the Twitter blog, a spokesperson for the group writes:

“Photos have been at the center of some of the biggest moments on Twitter. As a core part of the Twitter experience, it’s important that images shared on our platform are accessible to everyone, including those who are visually impaired.”

To access the new feature, users need to head to the compose image descriptions option, which is inside the Twitter app’s accessibility settings. Following that, users are able to add a description to images they post to their timeline in the future. Twitter notes that image descriptions can be up to 420 characters long.

Twitter’s latest announcement discussing changes to the mobile app emphasizes the group’s excitement over making images widely available to its userbase. Now, everybody can be included in the conversation.
